The learning path

How the training path is built: shared first steps, then three branches with units and steps — and how you unlock it step by step.

Web + app

Training in cori isn't a list you pick things from, it's a journey: one step after another, each one building on the last. In cori it's called Your musical journey. This page explains how it's built, how you unlock new things and where you pick up again.

Who is this for?

The learning path is personal. It belongs to you, not to your choir — your progress counts across all your choirs, and nobody in the choir sees which step you're currently on. You need neither a subscription nor choir leadership rights. You only need a microphone for the singing steps; the listening and rhythm steps work without one.

The structure: a shared beginning, then three branches

The path starts the same way for everyone, with “First Steps”. This single unit is called “Try it out” and consists of exactly three steps — one per type of exercise:

  1. “Big Differences” — a listening task: which of two notes is higher?
  2. “Keep the Beat” — a rhythm task: tap along with every metronome beat
  3. a singing step — the only one you have to sing for

As soon as these three steps are done, all three branches open at once:

BranchWhat it's aboutSize
Ear TrainingHearing notes, intervals, scale degrees and chord colours12 units, 37 steps
RhythmTapping, reading and rebuilding rhythms12 units, 53 steps
VoiceSinging exercises with a microphone3 units, 8 steps

The branches are independent of each other. You don't have to finish Ear Training to start with Rhythm, and you can switch back and forth at any time. Within a branch, on the other hand, things go in order.

The singing step can be skipped

Only the singing step in “First Steps” carries the note “Can't sing right now”. If you're sitting on a train or just don't fancy the microphone, tap it: the step then counts as done enough to open the branches — but it gives you no star and no XP. You can sing it properly later at any time and still collect the stars.

Units and steps

Each branch consists of units (the headings in the path, like “First Sounds”, “Tension & Rest” or “Quarters & halves”), and each unit of several steps. A step is exactly one exercise — a round takes about one to three minutes depending on the exercise.

1
Open a step

Tap the bubble in the path. The current step is highlighted — it's your “up next”. Locked steps are grey; if you tap one, cori tells you “Finish the previous exercise to unlock this one”.

2
Play the round

At the end you get a score from 0 to 100 and, from that, 0 to 3 stars.

3
Move on

From the first star onwards the step counts as passed and the next one opens. You don't have to stay for two or three stars — you can come back later and improve your result.

A whole unit counts as complete when every one of its steps has at least one star. That's the number you'll come across in your progress as “x/y units”.

How things get unlocked

Three routes open the next step — but only one earns stars:

  • Played and earned at least one star. The normal case: step completed, stars and XP credited.
  • Skipped (“Can't sing right now”). It opens the way but doesn't count as completed: no star, no XP.
  • Skipped via a test. A test you pass unlocks everything up to that unit in one go. The steps you skipped don't get stars either — read more under Skipping units.

A step you've already completed is never downgraded: if you play a round worse than last time, you keep the stars you had and your best score.

Where you pick up again

When you open the path you don't land at the beginning but where you last were.

Web app
In the sidebar there's the Learning path entry. Above the path you'll see your level and your total XP, and below it three cards for the branches — click one and the path underneath changes. If you come back from an exercise you've just played, the path jumps straight to the step you were on.
Mobile app
On the home screen, tap Exercises. The three branches sit side by side and you swipe sideways between them; at the top right, the level badge takes you to your training profile. cori remembers the branch you last practised in and opens it again next time.
Web only

Before you can start your first step in the browser, cori measures your vocal range once (“Find Your Vocal Range”). That takes about a minute and makes sure exercises sound in your register. Until it's done, the path stays greyed out. In the app this step isn't needed: there cori derives a starting value from your voice pitch in the choir until you take the test yourself. See Calibrating vocal range and rhythm.

Your progress belongs to your account, not your device

It's one path across all your devices: you can do a step on your phone on the train and carry on at your computer in the evening — same path, same XP, same level. The browser first records every round locally and syncs it with your account shortly afterwards. If you sign in on a new computer, cori fetches your progress from the server.

Without a connection you simply keep practising: your rounds are stored and submitted once you're back online. On a shared computer, each account only sees its own path.

Why the path is built this way

A single ear-training or rhythm step is tiny in itself — and that's exactly the point. Instead of “practise ear training”, all you ever face is the one next step, which asks for at most a little more than the one before. The three shared first steps exist so that you've experienced each type of exercise once before you decide — and the three branches exist so that your decision doesn't close anything off for good. If you don't feel like singing, ear and rhythm take you just as far.
