Skipping units

If you've long since mastered a topic, you don't have to work through it step by step. Most units of the learning path have a quick test: a handful of questions, and if you get through them, everything up to that point is unlocked.

Where the test appears

The test isn't a button next to the heading but a step of its own in the path, drawn with a dashed outline — it sits above the unit's first step and is called Skip here. If you can't find it on a unit, that unit either has no test or you've already started it.

Not every unit has one:

The two endless exercises (Ear Gym, Rhythm Gym) don't have one either — there's nothing to skip there. And the Voice branch has no tests at all on principle: singing steps are about singing, not about proving yourself.

Questions, mistakes, hearts

The scope depends on the branch and is fixed:

cori tells you up front: “Answer {number} questions with at most {mistakes} mistakes to unlock everything up to here.” At the top of the test you'll see hearts — one more than the number of mistakes you're allowed. Every mistake costs a heart; once the last one is gone, the test is over. If you make exactly as many mistakes as allowed and answer the rest correctly, you've passed.

The questions come from the unit's own exercises — from one to three of them depending on the unit, drawn alternately. So you're asked exactly what the unit would teach you. Rhythm tests run as tapping rounds, and the melodic dictation goes through the scale-degree bar.

What a passed test gets you

If you don't pass

Then nothing at all happens. cori says “Not this time — no worries. The path is the fun part anyway. Try again any time!” There's no XP deducted, no lockout and no waiting period: you can restart the test straight away (with new questions) or go back into the path and play the steps normally. The test stays available for as long as you haven't started the unit.

When it's worth it

• You've come from another choir or from music lessons and already know your intervals and note values: test your way through the early units instead of grinding them out.
• You've already practised in the app and are starting fresh in the browser: progress in the browser is stored locally and starts at zero there — a few tests get you back where you were in no time.
• You only want to practise one particular topic, syncopation for instance: test your way up to it instead of playing the ten units before it.

The other way round: if a topic genuinely interests you, the route through the steps is more rewarding. The test unlocks, but it doesn't train — and the stars, the badges and the lion's share of the XP hang on the rounds you play.
