Group chats
Choir-wide chats, automatic voice chats and custom groups — who creates them, who manages them and who's allowed to write.
Web + app
The Messages area is where all of your choir's chats come together. cori creates some of them automatically; others you create yourself. This guide shows you which kinds there are, who may manage them and how you control who writes in them. How to start a survey in a chat is described under Creating a survey.
Your conversations are grouped in the sidebar: Choir-wide (one chat for everyone), Voices (one automatic chat per voice part), Groups (custom chats you create yourselves) and Direct messages (one-to-one conversations). Direct messages are covered in Chats and surveys.
Chats cori creates automatically
There are two kinds of chat you never have to create yourself — cori keeps them in sync with your choir's member list automatically:
- The choir-wide chat always contains every member, including the choir leadership and admins. It can't be created or deleted by hand.
- The voice chats appear automatically as soon as there are members with a voice pitch — one each for soprano, alto, tenor and bass. Subdivided voices (e.g. “Alto 1” and “Alto 2”) share a single chat for the main voice.
Voice chats belong to their section: the choir leadership and admins are not added automatically. Anyone who switches voice moves into the new voice chat and out of the old one at the next sync. Every member of that voice may manage its chat — renaming works, but the member list stays tied to the voices.
Create your own group
Any choir member can create a group of their own (for a project, the committee or a performance weekend) — not just the choir leadership.
In Messages, choose New chat and then Group.
Give the group a name under “Group name” and tick the members who should be part of it. You're included automatically and become the admin of that group.
Turn on “Add new choir members automatically” if future joiners should be added to the group for you. With “Only admins can write” you decide that members can read along but only the choir leadership and the admins may write — ideal for announcements.
Choose Create. The group is ready to use straight away.
Chat info: adjusting things later
Open the chat info to manage a group.
What you can do there depends on the kind of chat and on your role:
- In a custom group, its admins as well as the choir leadership and choir admins can change the name and group picture, add or remove members, make other members admins and flip the two switches at the top. A group always needs at least one admin.
- In a voice chat the name can be adjusted; the members follow from the voices and can't be edited by hand.
- In the choir-wide chat only the choir leadership and admins can open the info — and there they can only flip the “Only admins can write” switch.
This switch sits per chat in the chat info, not in the choir settings. When it's on, only the choir leadership and admins may send messages; when it's off, everyone joins in. The choir leadership and admins can flip it in every group, voice and choir-wide chat.
Turn off notifications for a single chat
If you'd like a particular chat to be quieter, mute it: in the open chat you'll find the bell icon at the top (Mute). That applies to you only and to that chat only — everyone else keeps getting messages. Tapping it again unmutes the chat.
There's no “leave chat” of your own: anyone who should no longer be in a group is removed by an admin via the chat info. A group can be deleted entirely by its admins as well as by the choir leadership and choir admins — all messages are lost in the process. The choir-wide chat can't be deleted, and a voice chat only once there are no members of that voice left in the choir.
