Roles and permissions in a choir
Choir director, admin and member — who's allowed to do what in cori, and why admin rights mean more than you'd think.
Web + app
Every cori choir has three roles: choir director, admin and member. They decide who can upload songs, create appointments, manage members or change the subscription. This article shows what each role can do — and what to watch out for when handing out admin rights.
In cori, admins have practically the same rights as the choir director — right up to deleting the entire choir. The difference is smaller than the name suggests. Only give admin rights to people you'd trust with the choir.
The three roles
Choir director — whoever created the choir. They own it: they're the only person who can't be removed or demoted while they hold the leadership. There can only ever be one choir director.
Admin — a member the choir director (or another admin) has given admin rights to. Admins take care of the organising: inviting, looking after songs and sheet music, planning appointments, managing members. There can be as many admins as you like.
Member — your singers. They practise, read sheet music, accept or decline appointments and take part in chats.
Who can do what?
Managing members — the choir director and admins. That covers creating invitation links, changing other people's voice type, granting and removing admin rights, and removing members from the choir.
Songs, sheet music and setlists — the choir director and admins can create, edit, archive and delete. Members can open and practise everything.
Appointments and attendance — the choir director and admins create, change and cancel appointments. Members enter their own acceptance or decline.
Drive — the choir director and admins upload, create folders, move and delete. What members see depends on each folder's visibility.
Messages — the choir director and admins can always write. Whether members may send messages too is set in the choir settings via Members can send messages.
Subscription and billing — the choir director and admins.
The subscription can only be managed in the web app. In the mobile app you'll just find a pointer to it at that spot.
Deleting the choir — the choir director and admins. See Deleting a choir.
Changing your own voice type — everyone. Every member can adjust their own voice at any time; for other people's voice you need to be the choir director or an admin.
What makes the choir director special
Less than you'd expect. The choir director has no exclusive features — what mainly sets them apart from admins is that they can't be removed or demoted themselves. Those are exactly the entries missing from their member menu.
In practice that means an admin can also appoint a new choir director. If you don't want that, be sparing with admin rights.
Changing roles
Go to Choir and find the person in the member list.
Tap or click the ⋮ next to their name. The menu only appears if you're the choir director or an admin yourself.
You have these options:
- Change Voice — correct the person's voice type
- Add admin rights / Remove admin rights — switch between member and admin
- Appoint as New Lead — hand over the leadership
- Remove from Choir — take the person out of the choir
The previous choir director automatically becomes an admin — so they don't lose access, just the leadership status. The new choir director gets an email. The same goes for granting admin rights: cori sends an email about that too.
What's next?
- Promoting someone: Giving someone admin rights
- Handing over leadership: Transferring the choir leadership
- Removing someone: Removing a member from your choir
- Bringing new people in: Inviting members to your choir
